Kids are messy by nature, and there’s not much you can do about that. They learn as they get older how to maneuver through life without making a mess of everything. For now, though, they make a mess of everything. Most all their food ends up on their face, their clothes, and the floor. Their artwork somehow ends up in their hair, and their shoes never miss a puddle. It’s Murphy’s Law. If the kids can find something messy to get on the carpet, they will do it.

Make sure they know artwork is for the dining room. Make them take their shoes off at the door, and ban eating anywhere but the bar or the dining room table. They’re simple boundaries, but they’re quite effective when it comes to raising kids on white carpet.
